When wind or hail occurs, it’s important to check for roof damage. Even slight damage left by storms can weaken shingles, leaving your roof open to more significant problems down the road.
After a wind or hailstorm, go outside and inspect your roof from the ground. Look for dented, loose or cracked shingles or portions of roof that are missing entirely. Taking photos for insurance purposes is a good idea, but don’t get up on your roof.
Hail
- Look for even slight impressions in your shingles. Small dents seem harmless, but they loosen the granules covering the shingles, leaving them vulnerable to water, sun and ice.
Wind
- Wind can also loosen shingles, which leads to the same problems caused by hail.
- Trees downed by winds are another concern, if large portions land on the roof and impact the shingles.

The best way to determine if you’ve sustained damage is to contact a roofing professional for an inspection. It’s much wiser to have someone trained look for the damage (particularly if they need to get up on the roof).
